Max Frankel Jewish Prisoner Program

The  B’nai B’rith Denver Max Frankel Jewish Prisoner Program has sponsored Passover Seders and Rosh Hashanah services for over 60 years.  Twice a year, volunteers make a 220 mile round trip to Fremont Correctional Facility in Cañon City.

Why is it important to conduct Rosh Hashanah services and a Passover Seder?  Many Jewish prisoners have a lot of time on their hands and reconnect to their Jewish identity while in prison. Services may be the only connection to the outside Jewish community and the human contact helps many inmates get through the difficult times.

How To Get Involved

1) Volunteer: Complete a volunteer application, an 8 hour Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison training, facility orientation of the prison, and intensive security check prior to each visit.   In addition, the CDOC requires that volunteers take an annual 4 hour followup class.  We know that the process to volunteer is time consuming; however, if you plan to live in Colorado for a long time, it is a great way to volunteer twice a year and make a huge difference in the lives of prisoners.

* Please note that all volunteers are B’nai B’rith paid  members.  Your annual dues contribute to our Denver and national programs including The Max Frankel Jewish Prisoner Program.

2) Donate to help purchase food for Rosh Hashanah and Passover services:  We have specific food that has to be purchased and approved by the CDOC. Please consider making a financial contribution to help make Rosh Hashanah and Passover meals possible or consider shopping for the specific items that are required for seder.

3) Writing a letter to a Jewish inmate:  The CDOC has specific requirements for writing prisoners letters. To learn more, please visit here. Consider writing a letter and having one of our volunteers deliver it during the holidays.

4) Donating money to support this program: The Max Frankel Jewish Prisoner Program not only provides invaluable services to prisoners,  it helps the previously incarcerated become self-sufficient by providing bus passes to get to and from work, assistance purchasing food and other resources.

If you want to become more involved, please e-mail: admin@bnaibrithdenver.org.
